2021 San Francisco Bay Trail
In November of 2021, during a lull in the COVID pandemic, we decided to celebrate our 20th anniversary by cycling the San Francisco Bay Trail. We did a full loop from San Rafael, down the pennisula to San Jose and return via the East Bay and the Richmond San Rafael Bridge. The Bay Trail is not yet completed, but we were able to find safe routes that bridged the gaps between sections.
2013 Eaux de France
Our tour of the "Waters of France" was our longest tour yet across Europe - 2,600km. We started in Montpellier, traveling from the Mediterranean Sea along the Canal du Midi and Garonne River to the Atlantic coast, taking Euro Velo 1 north, then following Euro Velo route 6 along the Loire, Saone, Doubs, Rhein, and Aare rivers - back to Switzerland. For those planning a tour - all of our proposed routes and GPS tracks are also available at the following link.
2010 Northern Idaho Rail Trails
The plan was to continue the Lewis and Clark Trail - but we've been spoiled by the European cycle paths and have little desire to ride the narrow dangerous U.S highways anymore. So we found a network of Rail Trails from Spokane Washington, across northern Idaho into Montana. We then drove some of the Lewis and Clark route and Yellowstone - taking shorter day-trips along the way.
2009 Vienna to Amsterdam
2000km across Europe almost completely on off-road paths! Jon and Mary Carol returned to Europe to follow the Danube, Altmuhl, Main, and Rhein rivers from Vienna to Amsterdam. These were some of the most beautiful paths we've ever cycled, not to mention the castles, cathedrals, museums, and music along the way.
2006 C and O Towpath
We followed the unpaved Chesapeake and Ohio Canal trail from Cumberland Maryland to Washington DC, then followed the Old Dominion trail to our friend's home near Dulles Airport. It was a muddy and slow ride but the trail is wonderfully scenic and historic. We would recommend panniers as the trailer was a bit wide for parts of the path.
2005 Tour d'Europe
Jon and Mary Carol spent 6 weeks touring Europe by tandem bicycle in the late summer of 2005. They maintained a website while on the road, with daily journals of their experiences. Their travels took them to the Netherlands, northern France, and England. The bicycling was mostly in the Netherlands and France's Loire Valley.
2004 Lewis and Clark, Columbia River
Our long range plan is to follow the travels of Lewis and Clark's journey, from Astoria Oregon to St. Louis Missouri. The bicycling will be divided in smaller trips over several years. This trip is the beginning of the journey, following the Columbia River across Washington and Oregon - ending in Richland Washington, at Jon's cousins.
2003 Erie Canal: with Nathan
Mary Carol's first cycling tour was across New York, following the Erie Canal. Nathan was working in Rochester and was able to join us on the weekends. We did not have the tandem yet, but the ride was supported with sag wagons to carry our gear.
1997-1998 Awsome Across America Adventure: Jon and Nathan
Jon and Nathan followed the 1976 Trans-America bicycle route from Florence Oregon to Yorktown Virginia. They carried their own gear, and took almost 3 hours of video along the way. This site is a collection of stories and images from those videos, overlaid on maps of each day's ride.
