Oh what a lovely, lovely day! Leaving
The chateau at Villandry was just 1 km. off our trail. The building itself is pretty standard chateau stuff. Here the amazing thing is the surroundings. The owner in the early 1900’s dedicated himself to constructing and reconstructing extensive gardens. Huge, gorgeous, symbolic, useful, serene…almost impossible to believe the work that must have gone into the original realization of his vision and which continues to be necessary to maintain it. This is definitely on our list of recommended chateaux. We bypassed the small chateau at Langeais, opting to get on to our B&B
at the tiny town of ![]() We strolled all over town (that took about 10 minutes) and wandered back to
the hotel to wait. Learning that we were (sort of) at loose ends, our hosts served
up some of the local wine sitting us by the crackling fireplace. They were also very helpful in finding us a hotel in Saumur for our next few days. The Castel de Bray Et
Monts has an interesting entrance, a double spiral staircase. Returning to the little bar to eat, we sat ourselves down at a tiny table. Even the guys hanging out there shooshed us out, saying it was better to be in the
back. Oops! Another assumption on our part!
It turned out the restaurant was in back. There we ended up having a very
well-prepared meal and meeting the couple at the next table, two Canadians, with whom we shared laughs and stories. Val, Vins,
et Vues |
